Otie is a quintessential Pacifican and is completely committed to volunteer-based community radio - since taking the PD position a few months ago scores of members of the Houston community have been brought onto the air to produce a diverse variety of programming. Otie has a long history with our movement and an even longer one with Pacifica - he began as a producer at WBAI in the 1960's, taking up with KPFT when he moved to Houston. He has, and continues to, mentor new producers. He is a strong advocate of bold and freewheeling on-air discussion to grapple with social issues. He has been active in the freepacifica movement since 1996, even before being purged by Garland Ganter (under an alias) and two years ago set up Radio 4 Houston in order to provide a weekly webcast on Pacifica movement issues. Under his thus far brief tenure at KPFT, the station seems to be on the path of becoming the most dynamic and creative in the network - Otie is not afraid to experiment and really ought to be a model for what a Pacifica program director does - encourage and develop the creative skills and on-air participation of the community. Instead of being universally lauded, he is now being viciously attacked, and I can't help but feel (and I know others concur) that his determination to air controversial programming is at the root. Over the years, I know that Otie has been appreciated by Pacifica activists all over the country. If you are one of those, please act now to encourage Duane Bradley to give him his full support, and not to yield to the dubious but vociferous campaign against him. Solidarity, Lyn -- ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ First they came for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up. --Pastor Martin Niemoeller ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ New Pacifica Working Group http://www.egroups.com/group/NewPacifica 'Save Our Stations!'
